Scout Sunday Observed at First Presbyterian Church
February 26, 2026
Members of the Scouting community were recognized during Scout Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, as the congregation joined churches nationwide in honoring the values and traditions of Scouting.
Scout Sunday traces its origins to the mid-1940s and was established to commemorate the founding of the Boy Scouts of America, which officially began on Feb. 8, 1910. The observance is held each year on the Sunday preceding Feb. 8, or on Feb. 8 itself when it falls on a Sunday.
Oklahoma holds a special place in Scouting history. The first Boy Scout troop in the United States was organized in May 1909 in Pawhuska by the Rev. John F. Mitchell, predating the national founding of the organization.
Scout Sunday emphasizes the religious and community-focused aspects of Scouting. During the observance, Scouts are encouraged to reflect on the 12th point of the Scout Law — “A Scout is Reverent” — and their commitment to “Duty to God.” The day serves as an opportunity for churches to recognize the positive role Scouting plays in shaping character, service, and leadership among youth.
At First Presbyterian Church, the observance highlighted the longstanding relationship between faith communities and Scouting, honoring the principles that have guided Scouts for more than a century.
A healthy Kay County requires great community news.
